I watched four or five “BANJO INSTRUCTORS” on YouTube try to give lessons on learning Doug Dillard’s “Banjo in the Hollow,” a song I learned directly from Doug’s recording on Back Porch Bluegrass at least a thousand years ago, when the album first came out. To my utter disgust, each and all of the so-called “instructors” FAILED to play the first EIGHT NOTES correctly. Specifically, each and every “instructor” got the seventh and eighth notes WRONG. That makes their videos WORTHLESS.
BTW, each teacher announced how “easy” it was to learn. Duhhh!
All they would have had to do was listen to Doug as he started the song. If in doubt, slow down the recording a bit. Ain’t hard to hear those two notes ring out, like they’re supposed to. That sets the entire mood for the whole tune.
So, watch out if you’re trying to learn…ANYTHING… off YouTube, especially music. At least give a listen to the original before you have some fool slow it down for you and teach it…incorrectly. Here’s Doug:
